Watch Your Language

I am fairly sure that everyone is aware that it is not what we say, but the way we say it that has a big impact on people. If not, well that is a fact. The most common example is saying that someone has passed away instead of saying that someone has died. Both mean the same thing, but one just sounds better than the other. This idea of using certain language to appeal to certain groups of people is used everywhere in our lives, most heavily in politics and marketing. This idea about using certain language to appeal to certain groups of people was presented in The Persuaders , but even the average person would be aware of this even without having seen the program. From my perspective that is just stupid, choosing one over the other because one sounds nicer, when they mean the same thing. Having done an exercise in class about the connotation of words, we are all guilty of choosing certain words over others because of their connotative meaning. We shou...

The Integrity of Turnitin

Like all the students in our World Cultures, we had to submit our term papers to Turnitin as well as hand in a hard copy. When I submitted my term paper to Turnitin, I found something very interesting. Just like many other websites, its homepage was essentially a giant ad for itself. Is it surprising? Just a little. Should it be surprising? In this day, I guess it should not be that surprising. The homepage had lots of phrases trying to make this online program sound like it is the next best thing for students and teachers. It was making it sound like this was key to helping improve a student's writing. It had phrases like, "Your Partner in Education with Integrity," or "Improve Student Writing with Instant Feedback as They Revise." Another statement, " Deliver Feedback that Engages Students and Drives Success." I guess all these phrases provides some information about what this program does. From those three phrases we would assume that this program...

Differences in Media

It makes sense that no two articles in the news are going to be exactly the same right? Even if the two articles are on the same exact topic but published by different news agencies, the stories are going to be different. That is just how it is going to be because they are written by different people with different views, and those different views are going to result in different ideas being conveyed by their writing. Looking at two different articles about President Trump's opinion of North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Un, this is very clear. In the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) News article, "Donald Trump: N Korea's Kim Jong-un a 'smart cookie'," the article takes on a more broad approach to the issue. The article focuses mainly on Donald Trump and North Korea and how he wants to solve the problem. The article focuses on Donald Trump's opinion of North Korea's leader. It focuses on providing the viewer with information about what the Presi...

My Relationship with Media

The definition of media is a channel of communication. In general, I would consider my use of media to be about average. I typically use media for entertainment and informative purposes. My typical access to media comes through the use of technology whether it is by a computer, smartphone, or television. It also comes in form of books for my classes, and I guess, at its most rudimentary form talking. My opinion of media is complicated. So let's start with how I use media. As I said before I use media for entertainment and informative purposes. Focusing on the more technological forms of media, I use it for entertainment by using it for music and video games. I use media for informative purposes when I use media for school. Whether it is for a term paper, or finding information related to my next post for a media blog. I also use it for information when I look up fact and other bits of information when I come across something in life that I find interesting, whether it is about...
