Differences in Media

It makes sense that no two articles in the news are going to be exactly the same right? Even if the two articles are on the same exact topic but published by different news agencies, the stories are going to be different. That is just how it is going to be because they are written by different people with different views, and those different views are going to result in different ideas being conveyed by their writing. Looking at two different articles about President Trump's opinion of North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Un, this is very clear.

In the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) News article, "Donald Trump: N Korea's Kim Jong-un a 'smart cookie'," the article takes on a more broad approach to the issue. The article focuses mainly on Donald Trump and North Korea and how he wants to solve the problem. The article focuses on Donald Trump's opinion of North Korea's leader. It focuses on providing the viewer with information about what the President of the United States said. It relies on quoting the President of the United States rather than paraphrasing what he said, and providing context to the quotes. The article stayed very close to the title of the article discussing Trump's opinion of the leader, and the actions North Korea has taken over the past few weeks. The article also briefly focused on how Trump was going to solve the problem with North Korea. In general this article focused on reporting the information about Trump's opinion of the situation regarding North Korea and North Korea's leader.

In the NBC News article, "Trump on North Korea’s Kim Jong Un: ‘He’s a Pretty Smart Cookie’," the main focus here was to also report the information about the topic at hand, but it provided information that was not related to the article towards the end as well. The article originally focused on Trump talking about North Korea's leader. Then it focused on North Korea's nuclear missile tests, and how he planned to solve the problem there (with the help of China). Then, apparently because Trump's solution about North Korea involved China, the article switched to Trump discussing is current standings with the Chinese. Apparently his relationship is quite good. Then from there it moved to the topic of one his campaign promises which was labeling China a currency manipulator, and how he has not followed through on his promise. Then it shifts again to the topic of hacking in the presidential election, and how it could have been anyone the Russians or even the Chinese. It then concluded with how Trump was liking his first one-hundred days in office. In short, this article focused on a wide aspect of things, and not just the topic at hand.

Why are there these differences between the articles? It is because there are different views being addressed here. The first article has an outsider's perspective to our politics. Being from the British Broadcasting Corporation, they would only really report the news because they are talking about politics that are not about them. They would only have to report the news because that information may affect them. They also lack an understanding to politics in the United States because they do not live here. This lack of a true understanding of United States politics would leave them with only having to report the news focusing on the topic at hand. Now the NBC News article is from an American's view. It is from the view of one who is in the United States. Having this kind of a perspective would result in a more opinionated view and a better understanding of what is going on here. A better understanding of what is going on would give the author a more opinionated view of the situation. As a result their article shows that view, addressing other things Trump has said in the article about North Korea. By talking about past campaign promises, or the first one-hundred days all is irrelevant information, not related to North Korea. By bringing up those extra bits of information we are reminded of the outrageous things Trump has said and done, and we begin to create our own opinions of the situation we are currently in. These two articles both report the information, but they do very different things in the end based on the views of the two authors.
