Verizon's Marketing Strategy
For the past few weeks I have been analyzing Verizon Wireless. I have been analyzing their marketing strategy and their techniques used to convey their message. They are trying to target your average white, working middle class, family of four. They are trying to convey the idea that your family life could be better, and more connected than you already are. They are saying that your family life could be better. They are trying to make you believe that in order for your family life to be good, Verizon needs to be a part of that life. They are trying to make Verizon an essential part of your family life. They are trying to convey this idea by focusing on their unlimited plan. They are trying to convey that they are better by saying that other companies have failed you, and that Verizon will deliver on everything you want. They are trying to make the argument that they are better than everyone else. They however are also making you make the assumption that bigger is better, that being the best is a reason to go with Verizon, and that Verizon is the best company. These are all insufficiently informed assumptions being made based on the one side facts and ideas Verizon has given you in their advertisements.
What are the problems with the way they present this idea? First they are giving you a one side presentation of Verizon. They are making Verizon appear to be the best by saying that have having the most coverage makes them the best. They are just basing it on that information. There is much more than just coverage that determines whether or not they are the best. Second, they are assuming that you are leading a tough family life. They are saying that your family life could be better than it already is with Verizon. There is a problem with that. Your family life could already be good, and you may not believe in their argument that your life could be better with Verizon. The other problem with what they are presenting is that they are forcing you to make assumptions. Any smart, logical person would be able to see that what they are saying is not actually connected. They are saying to things, and just saying that is why you should go with Verizon. They are not outright saying that this is why you should go with them, or saying that this is a reason to support Verizon.
What problems will this create for the audience? The main problem it will create is that the audience will begin to believe that Verizon is an essential part of family life. They are going to believe that in order for their family life to be good, you need to be on Verizon's unlimited plan. They are going to believe that family life could be better than what it is right now, even if it is already pretty good. That can create psychological problems as well, but that is purely a hypothetical possibility. There is no concrete evidence to that. Their ads have the potential to create problems for people, if we do not look at them and analyze what they are doing. We need to understand them to prevent this from happening.
