Miss Representation 1
In the documentary Miss Representation, they talk about how in the United States women are miss represented and under represented in everything from politics to science fields. It describes how there is a difference between the things men do and the things women do. It brought up a bunch of statistics saying that more than fifty percent of the United States population is female, but then it brought up how in these jobs they are not even close to a majority. For example Congress, only seventeen percent of Congress is female. They then went to say that the root cause of this is the media. The way the media portrays women gives us the idea that this is the way life needs to be. Where females are under represented and forced to do only certain jobs. It also briefly touched on the subject where it also makes men feel that they have to be masculine, and it defines what is and what is not masculine.
I agree that women are still at a disadvantage when it comes to men. They are miss represented and under represented in many places in society. They face a lot of criticism just because of their gender, and at times are solely based upon that one fact. This is a problem in the United States, and the fact that I have to say that gender in equality is a problem in the United States, it is just ridiculous. We are supposed to the nation of freedom and equality. We are supposed to be where everyone is equal. That is what it says into the Constitution. We should not be facing this problem here in the United States in this time. The fact that we are like this, that this is the reality, is disappointing. We are supposed to be a nation where the majority is heard, but how can that happen where we are not even including the majority into our lives? Why is this the reality? I have no idea. The media is responsible for giving us this message. Like the documentary said, the media is full of these messages that men are superior, and that women can only do certain jobs, and they must look a certain way and act a certain way. Is that true? Most likely yes because we have seen studies that with increased violence in media, we have seen increased violence in children. By that logic we can say that any message in the media, if sent long enough, will eventually manifest itself in our daily lives. In this case it is not violence, but gender inequality.
What can we do? Honestly, we have been like this so long that we may not be able to accept a change in direction because to many individuals, change is scary. That is one of the many irrational fears of humans. We have been sending this message that women in power is bad; that women need to act a certain way and only this way, for so long that we have become to believe that this is the way life must be. It will most likely take us twice as long to fix it. Where do we start? We cannot start up top with the adults, the people that have been around for a long period of time in this generation because they are already set in their ways. We need to start young. Start with the next generation, condition them to think a different way. Make them believe in this new idea. We need to change what we send out in the media. This will only happen once we restructure the higher levels, places of management and put in more women. Then we need to be able to understand media, we need to be able to analyze it in the way that we analyze books because we are influenced by media. Lastly, we need to understand that we are our greatest enemy, so we need to make sure that we do not try and tear down what we start. We need to work as a team to solve the problem, otherwise nothing changes. Will it work, I do not know, but we can try.
